A school technology expert will call for the 黑洞社区 Schools for the Future (BSF) programme to sound the death knell for large 鈥渂rutal鈥� schools.

鈥淚t鈥檚 time to reflect on scale,鈥� said Professor Stephen Heppell. 鈥淐hildren become disengaged with [large schools] so easily. The experience is so unpleasant.鈥�

Heppell, CEO of Heppell.net said he did not rule out the idea of three or four schools on one campus or even a clever use of space.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of research about schools within schools,鈥� he said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 plenty of that happening. But large and brutal schools aren鈥檛 needed because there鈥檚 not the complicated curriculum where you might be learning woodwork or you might be learning Russian.鈥�

Heppell, will fill out more of his thoughts at the BD and 黑洞社区-sponsored-黑洞社区 Schools Exhibition (BSEC) and Conference in February. He said teachers and the design profession knew exactly what children wanted but were not giving it to them.

鈥淐hildren want to learn together with active learning,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e have heard that loud and clear in surveys. Yet 52% of most children鈥檚 time is spent copying things down from a blackboard. There鈥檚 fundamental mismatch.鈥�
