Designs for the 710m tower by architect Hafeez Contractor were approved in India yesterday.

Plans to build the world鈥檚 tallest skyscraper in Delhi were given the go-ahead yesterday.

The structure will be built in the suburb of Nodia, and will be 710 metres tall - 202 metres higher than Taiwan鈥檚 Taipei 101 the current tallest building. The tower could be completed by 2013.

The skyscraper, designed by Hafeez Contractor, will be 150-storeys high and will house a 40-storey glass atrium, a 50-floor five-star hotel and 370,000m2 of retail space.

Hafeez Contractor said: 鈥淭his is a very large development for Nodia and makes a lot of business sense. The locals are very jubilant about the plan.鈥

The 140-hectare site had already been purchased for the skyscraper but there are a number of hurdles to overcome before building can commence. The cost, estimated at 拢5bn, is a major factor but officials say that foreign investors are very keen to take part.
