Economist Kate Barker has been asked to lead a second review of the UK鈥檚 planning system. The government responded to Barker鈥檚 first report on housing supply last week.
The new study, announced in the pre-Budget report last week, is part of the government鈥檚 plan to raise productivity and tackle the challenges of the global economy. It also includes plans to create 鈥渞eal estate investment trusts鈥 to improve the UK鈥檚 commercial and residential investment markets.
The review鈥檚 terms of reference will be to 鈥渃onsider how planning in England can better deliver sustainable economic development in a timely and transparent manner鈥.
It will look at ways of speeding up the planning system and making it more predictable and transparent.
