Bam has been appointed by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) to develop three schools worth a combined £32m.

The first is a £16m deal to build teaching facilities for Helston Community College in Cornwall (pictured left). A new block on the north will also provide a dining hall, sports hall and ancillary accommodation, with old spaces being demolished afterwards to make way from modern sports pitches.

Bam has developed the initial designs for the new college with architect Stride Treglown.

Work on Helston starts in March and is due to complete by spring 2020.

This is the first of three schools that could be built by Bam in south east England. Newquay Tretherras School (pictured below), also in Cornwall, has submitted planning proposals while Plympton Academy in Plymouth is in the planning stage.

Works on both of these new schools are each valued at around £8m, bringing the development total for the three buildings to £32m.

The ESFA’s £4.4bn Priority School ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø Programme is rebuilding or refurbishing school buildings deemed in the very worst condition across the country. There are two phases to the programme, covering 537 schools.

Most of the 260 schools in the first phase were opened in their new or refurbished buildings by the end of 2017 – two years earlier than originally planned. Under the second phase, the ESFA plans to have all schools open in their new or refurbished buildings by the end of 2021.
