Luxury and sustainability come together on the banks of the river Trent.

Work has started at River Crescent, Nottingham's flagship sustainable building project on the banks of the Trent. Gordon Mitchell, Nottingham City Council's chief executive, officially launched the scheme, which includes 130 luxury waterside apartments next to Colwick Country Park. The 拢26m project, which was conceived by Kevin Riley and John Rhodes of Trent Park Developments, is being built by Clegg Construction.

Riverside Crescent's eco-credentials include an integrated photo-voltaic roofing system, solar reflective glazing, high levels of sound and thermal insulation, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, heat pumps from the river and vertical-axis wind turbines which will heat and light shared areas of the development.

John Rhodes said that there were two big reasons to do more to conserve and renew energy: "Firstly there's the question of global warming and the future of the planet; then there's the issue of security of UK energy supplies. With the decline in the reserves of North Sea oil and gas, this is going to become increasingly critical."

When completed, River Crescent will become part of the Nottingham Waterside regeneration plan to develop the River Trent from Colwick Park to Trent Bridge.
