Explanation time for the NEC

I along with others involved with procurement in the construction and engineering industries have noted that the NEC contract looks set to be used on the 2012 Olympics. If a professional approach is to be made with regard to this important decision it is necessary to apply a business like method for the selection. This could involve a small panel of experts appointed to make recommendations.

Those organisations responsible for producing standard forms such as the JCT, ICE, GC Works/1 should be asked to make submissions to the panel, which would make its recommendations public.

Geoff Brewer is quoted as saying the government has never explained why this contract alone is the document of choice (News, QS News, 25 August). If it is not too late and my suggestion is adopted, then the decision-making process will be transparent.
