MP Peter Ainsworth鈥檚 Green Energy Bill has gained further support, following its successful second reading in Parliament last week.

The former DEFRA shadow secretary鈥檚 bill aims to remove the need for planning permission for renewable installations for domestic premises and exempt renewable installations from council tax increases.

SIG Sustainable Solutions has described the bill as a 鈥渧ital first step鈥� in meeting environmental targets.

Paul Roche, SIG Sustainable Solutions director, said: 鈥淭he energy performance of existing building stock is a major challenge for the UK. The stark fact remains that 90% of buildings standing in 2050 have already been built 鈥� therefore improving their energy performance, which counts for 27% of CO2 emissions, is key.鈥�

Dave Sowden, chief executive of the Micropower Council, also commented on the Bill passing it鈥檚 second reading, saying he was 鈥渄elighted that Parliament once again is pushing the microgeneration agenda.鈥�

Ainsworth described the outcome of the reading as a 鈥渧ictory for common sense鈥� but said that the government was still reticent to agree to the council tax exemption.

The bill will now go to committee and then onto the Lords. If passed the bill could be on the statute books as soon as October.
