Good to see proposed infrastructure projects (“High-speed rail network proposals revealed”, 11 March, building.co.uk), but I notice that the emphasis is on improving transport to and from London. There are high-speed rail networks to and from London already in existence
What is needed are high-speed rail networks to mirror the motorway network.
I would suggest an upgrade from Newcastle to Bristol via Leeds, Sheffield and Birmingham and an improvement to the transpennine routes.
It is a joke that two of our major commercial centres, Manchester and Leeds, are only 45 miles apart, but travelling between them takes an hour by train.
