The time of the year has once again passed when chartered surveyors look at the subscription demands and wonder why they remain members of the RICS (answers on a postcard – I can’t fathom it).

The main advantage of being a fellow of the RICS seems to belong to the RICS itself, in that it thinks you are able to pay a higher sub. I am minded of “think not of what your country can do for you, but of what you can do for your country”. After so many years of “doing” for the RICS (including being paid below the minimum wage to mark candidates for their Assessment of Professional Competence and Assessment of Technical Competence), this rings a little hollow.

For RICS members, let this be the year of “think not of what you can do for your institution, but of what your institution should do for you”.
