Imposing stricter safety regulations on the architect will not make construction safer as they are too far removed from the front line of construction (1 October, page 15).
Most accidents on site are caused by careless people and not careless architects. If the scaffolder wishes to erect scaffold and not use his harness then no amount of paperwork will prevent an accident from happening. What will prevent it is better training and development of the trades on site; full-time safety marshals; and an increase in the number of Health and Safety Executive inspectors targeting small contractors who have little regard for the regulations.
