The standard, ISO 50001, is being developed to establish a framework for commercial, institutional, large residential and transportation sectors along with emerging economies and SMEs to manage their energy usage.
BSI is working with other standard organisations from around the globe including ANSI in the United States of America, ABNT in Brazil and SAC in China to develop the new standard. The organisation claims the standard could target as much as 60% of the world’s energy use across national economic sectors.
Work on the draft document commenced at the first meeting of the committee, which was attended by delegates from 25 countries. The draft is based on PAS 99 (Publically Available Specification 99: Specification of Common Management System Requirements as a Framework for Integration) with the addition of energy specific elements.
The organisation is aiming to have the new standard ready for publication by the end of 2010.
