Methodology

Barbour ABI, provider of construction intelligence services and 黑洞社区鈥檚 sister company, contacted more than 500 firms for this year鈥檚 黑洞社区 Top Consultants鈥� Survey. 

They were sent a survey form asking for details on the number of chartered staff, non-chartered and technical staff, and domestic and worldwide fee incomes. 

Firms are ranked according to total UK chartered staff, and for QSs, architects, engineers and project managers by chartered staff in each respective discipline. Practices were also asked questions relating to: staff recruitment, wage patterns, margins, areas of work, and work expectations.

The survey relies upon firms completing and returning the annual survey form. For a variety of reasons firms sometimes decide not to take part. 

Only those firms that complete and return the survey form are included in the survey. Where firms have made two submissions, we have used data from the most complete submissions. Where firms have omitted answers from their response, we have left the space blank.

Where the given total chartered staff number for a profession did not match the total staff numbers listed for types of that profession (such as structural engineer or electrical engineer), then the total professional chartered number that was submitted has been used.

Notes

1. Atkins did not provide figures this year. A spokesperson said: 鈥淎tkins has recently been acquired by SNC-Lavalin and the two businesses are currently going through the process of integrating their systems, processes and people. This has coincided with the collation of data for 黑洞社区鈥檚 Top Consultants and it has not been possible for the merged organisation to provide the information required for this year鈥檚 rankings.鈥�  Based on last year鈥檚 staff numbers, Atkins would have remained the largest UK consultant by number of chartered staff. Other large businesses that failed to provide figures this year included CBRE, Deloitte Real Estate, Hurley Palmer Flatt and Waterman.

2. Chaplin Farrant Design Group figures reflect the departure from the group of engineering company CBL. 2016/17 turnover not yet available.

3. Currie & Brown figures reflect the acquisition of Sweett Group in September 2016.

4. JLL figures reflect the acquisition of M&E property maintenance firm Integral UK in August 2016.

5. NPS Group figures reflect NPS North East ceasing trading on

3. 1 October 2016 after TUPE transfer to an alternative provider. 

6. Pell Frischmann figures reflect the acquisition of M&E specialist Desco (Design and Consultancy) in August 2016.

7.  Ridge and Partners figures reflect the acquisition of PH Warr in December 2016.

8.  Turner & Townsend figures relate to the UK and Ireland.

9.  T脺V S脺D Real Estate figures include T脺V S脺D Dunbar Boardman (Lift Consultants), which became part of the UK business in 2016.

10. Whittam Cox Architects  rebranded from WCEC Architects this year.

11. WSP figures reflect the acquisition of Mouchel in October 2016.
