Appointment raises prospect of long-awaited Grand Central Station revamp

Morgan Sindall鈥檚 urban regeneration division Muse has been appointed preferred development partner on a 拢145m regeneration scheme in Stockport.

The appointment raises the prospect of Stockport鈥檚 retail-led Grand Central complex finally getting a revamp, after the redevelopment of the site was shelved because of the recession.

Outline planning permission to redevelop the site and to more than quadruple its retail floor space from 76,000ft2 to 476,000ft2 was granted back in 2007.

Stockport council purchased the complex in January this year to try and revive its redevelopment plans.

The new proposals include an office quarter, a hotel, increased public space and improved car parking.

Muse will now be recommended to Stockport council鈥檚 executive on 16 December 2011.

Paul Smith, chief executive of Morgan Sindall, said: 鈥淲e are delighted to be selected as preferred bidder on this regeneration scheme for what is set to be an exciting development for Stockport.

鈥淢use has been highly successful recently in securing a number of regeneration projects including Basingstoke and Deane, Warrington and Chester, which have a total development value of approximately 拢590m.

鈥淩egeneration schemes are large scale and complex projects that very few companies are capable of delivering. Morgan Sindall has these capabilities and we see this part of the business as a key growth area in our medium term strategy.鈥
