New 390m tall tower planned next to Toyko鈥檚 central station
Mitsubishi is planning to build Japan鈥檚 tallest tower near Toyko鈥檚 main railway station.
Standing at 390m tall, the 61-storey skyscraper forms part of a huge $8.3bn (拢5.4bn) development in central Tokyo and surpasses Japan鈥檚 previously tallest building, Osaka鈥檚 Abeno Harukas tower, which stands at 300m tall.
The tower is one of three structures which will form a new heart of Tokyo鈥檚 financial hub.
Mitsubishi Estate President Hirotaka Sugiyama hoped the tower could improve the city鈥檚 standing as a financial centre. He said:
鈥淚 want this building to be as symbolic and as competitive [as other landmark buildings] in the world,鈥
The planned construction site in the Tokiwabashi area of Chiyoda Ward encompasses more than 30,000 square meters and is currently occupied by the HQ of JX Holdings Inc, as well as the Nippon 黑洞社区.
If given the go-ahead the tower would complete in 2027.
