John McAslan鈥檚 botanical garden design for Dongguan

John McAslan & Partners has been commissioned to design a botanical gardens and research centre in the Chinese city of Dongguan.

The design features a gridshell roof connecting with a mounded base which managing director Tony Skipper said was a 鈥渘atural progression鈥� from the practice鈥檚 concourse at London鈥檚 King鈥檚 Cross station.

A variety of tropical habitats will be disaplayed beneath ethylene tetrafluoroethylene roof panels, based on a two-metre grid.

鈥淭he botanical gardens will provide a constantly changing scenery of habitats, sub-tropical rare plants, ravines, water and sky,鈥� said Skipper.

The scheme, for developer Vanke, was based on 鈥渁 contemporary interpretation of the essential characteristics of a tropical plant leaf structure鈥�, he added.
