Firm racks up 551 projects over the year, pushing Balfour into second place
May saw both the top contractors overall and the list excluding civils headed by the same firms. Kier topped both lists, with 40 projects totalling £411.6m.
By value the bulk of this figure was accounted for by public works – £389m – with commercial accounting for £15.6m and housing £7.1m. To date, Kier also comfortably leads the cumulative annual table, with 551 projects totalling £2.36bn, ahead of second-placed Balfour Beatty, which has recorded £1.93bn. May was the biggest month for Kier, well ahead of its next largest monthly total of £295.2m, recorded in October last year.
Morgan Sindall came in at second place on the overall chart, with 35 projects totalling £220m and with nearly £195m-worth of commercial work. The firm is currently fifth in the cumulative standings, with £1.15bn spread across 345 projects.
In third spot overall, McLaren posted £172.8m-worth of work with four deals, including a £55m job at Cabot Square in London’s Canary Wharf and a £23.3m commercial project in Welwyn Garden City. The firm currently sits at 10th place in the cumulative total for the past 12 months, with 20 projects valued at £809m.
At fourth place in the overall standings Willmott Dixon recorded 16 deals, valued at £162.7m, including an £83.1m job at Harrow Road for the Lord Mayor of London; the firm is in fourth spot in the cumulative yearly rankings, behind Multiplex. In fifth place in the overall table for May is Wates, which posted 23 projects valued at £110.5m, including a £29.5m deal for Cardiff council.
Hovering just outside the top five overall chart in sixth place was Balfour Beatty on £103.3m, spread across 33 projects, while the sixth slot in the excluding civils chart was occupied by Graham Construction, whose six deals totalled £81.3m.
