Richards Partington Architects’ plans for a former petrol station in Clerkenwell features ground source heat pumps, PVs and wind turbines
Richards Partington Architects (RPA) is proposing to turn a Clerkenwell petrol station into a car-free scheme with 20% of its energy generated on-site.
The £10m development, which has been submitted for planning, features a full range of sustainable features, including ground source heat pumps, rooftop wind turbines, solar thermal panels, and a community heating system.
Rainwater harvesting and cycle storage also feature on the mixed-use scheme which comprises 3300 sq ft of retail space, 20,000 sq ft of office space and 11 apartments. The architect has also included a pedestrian passageway linking Clerkenwell Road with St John’s Square.
Commenting on the scheme Simon Bradbury of Richards Partington Architects said: “Sustainability is not only about carbon emissions. We believe in the importance of economic viability and social capital as well as in contributing to local architectural and environmental quality.â€
