Joint developers McLaren Property and Citygrove win planning for tower in Vauxhall
Architect KPF has won planning for New Bondway, a 50-storey skyscraper in Vauxhall, known as the Jenga tower.
The 170m development for joint developrs McLaren Property - the development arm of contractor McLaren - and Citygrove involves several storeys of the tallest tower appearing to cantilever over a smaller, 25-storey tower.
The scheme, which will replace an old warehouse at 69-71 Bondway, right on the gyratory, contains 450 flats, office space, a gym, cinema and winter garden.
The office space will be stacked above 90 鈥渁ffordable鈥 flats in the lower building. There will be retail units at ground level.
Lambeth council approved it despite residents of a neighbouring building complaining that light to their flats would be blocked.
Objectors also complained that views of Westminster would be damaged.
An earlier 42-storey scheme by architect Make was approved by Lambeth in 2009, but thrown out by communities secretary Eric Pickles in 2011 over fears of a lack of public space.
Completion is expected in 2018.
KPF has also designed a neighbouring scheme, two towers known as One Nine Elms. Work to clear the site, occupied by the 1970s Market Towers offices, has begun.
