Work involves transforming former industrial site along banks of river Wear
Designs for a major 拢450m regeneration of a former industrial area of Sunderland have been unveiled.
The masterplan for the new city centre district, which spans both sides of the river Wear, has been announced by a team consisting of architects Faulkner Browns, Proctor & Matthews, MawsonKerr and landscape practice Camlins.
The 33ha site, which includes two new bridges crossing the river, is expected to provide 1,000 homes across five new neighbourhoods, 1m sq ft of office space in a new business district, a council headquarters building, hotel and a 450-seat auditorium.
Designed for Sunderland city council and its development partner Igloo Regeneration, the scheme is planned for a stretch of riverside close to Sunderland FC鈥檚 Stadium of Light ground.
Faulkner Browns has been tasked with designing the project鈥檚 mixed-use schemes, while Proctor & Matthews has designed the residential districts with local practice MawsonKerr assisting on the 126-home Vaux neighbourhood of the masterplan.
The 拢6m Flanagan Lawrence-designed auditorium, which will be housed in the city鈥檚 1907 former fire station building, is already being built by local contractor Brims.
Bowmer & Kirkland has also started building Faulkner Browns鈥 City Hall, the council鈥檚 new headquarters, with construction of KKA Architecture鈥檚 120-room Holiday Inn set to start on site soon.
