Crossrail is planning to redesign two or more of its stations to make a saving of up to £130m on the £16bn project
Crossrail is looking at replacing direct underground access from the new ticket hall at Liverpool Street station to the mainline station with a street-level link, saving an estimated £100m.
It would mean that passengers would have to exit the Wilkinson Eyre/Mott MacDonald-designed station to transfer to mainline rail services to Essex or other underground lines.
A source close to the matter said the decision was sensible because most people using the station were likely to get off and go to work in the area.
Meanwhile, ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø Design Partnership has been asked to work up a bridge to replace the proposed tunnel linking Whitechapel Crossrail station with the District and Circle lines. This would save £30m.
Switching to a bridge, which will go over the East London line, will avoid having to change the existing District line platform.
