Engineering giant appointed to shore up Thames Estuary defences
US consultant CH2M Hill has been appointed to deliver the environment agency鈥檚 拢300m Thames Estuary flood defence programme.
CH2M Hill, which is working with UK firms including contractor Balfour Beatty, saw off competition from rival US consultant Jacobs to win the contract.
The firms will refurbish and upgrade the current Thames estuary flood management systems over the next ten years.
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said: 鈥淭his 拢300m investment will reduce the risk of tidal flooding in the Thames, protecting over a million people and 拢200bn worth of property to ensure that London鈥檚 vital economy is not affected by adverse weather.鈥
CH2M Hill鈥檚 regional managing director Mark Thurston said he was 鈥渄elighted鈥 to have won the job.
He added: 鈥淭his programme fits perfectly alongside our other major infrastructure programmes in London including the Thames Tideway Tunnel, Crossrail and High Speed 2 and will help maintain London as a thriving and global leading city.鈥
