Southwark Primary School is part of Nottingham Council’s £90m BSF programme
Consultant Capita Symonds' architecture arm has been appointed to design the £13m rebuild of the Southwark Primary School in Nottingham as part of the city council’s £90m ºÚ¶´ÉçÇø Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
The project is part of a larger scheme involving 23 pathfinder Local Authorities across England who are working with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to deliver exemplar primary school projects, designed to set a high quality benchmark ahead of major government investment in new primary schools.
Located in Old Basford in the heart of Nottingham, the new building will cater for 630 children aged five to 11 while the nursery will cater for 90 children aged three to five.
Capita Architecture is developing a ‘courtyard’ scheme, radically different from conventional primary school design, providing a number of unique spaces that will help the school explore a variety of innovative teaching styles.
The building is aiming for eco-standard BREEAM 'Exellent' accreditation by maximising natural light and natural ventilation.
Parent company Capita Symonds is also part of the inspiredspaces consortium led by support services and construction firm Carillion.
The consortium is working with the City Council and Partnership for Schools as part of the Local Education Partnership (LEP) which is overseeing the Nottinghamshire BSF programme.
The consultant is providing partnering, educational and building design services on the programme, with Capita Architecture providing architectural services.
Construction work is due to begin this month with the new school due to open in February 2010.
