A team led by Glancy Nicholls Architects has designed the scheme
Birmingham鈥檚 plans for the 2022 Commonwealth Games have taken a step forward with plans for the residential element of the athletes鈥 village submitted for planning.
The village, which will be built on the site of the former Birmingham City University campus in Perry Barr, will be large enough to accommodate the 6,500 athletes and officials coming to Birmingham in the summer of 2022.
After the Games the village will provide around 1,400 new homes across a range of tenures 鈥 social and affordable rent, homes for sale, and for private rent. The development will also include an extra care village for older people and a community centre.
Glancy Nicholls Architects is acting as the lead architect in the development of the masterplan of the Commonwealth Games Village and Glenn Howells Architects has designed 50% of buildings in the scheme.
John Crabtree, chairman of Glenn Howells Architects and Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, was appointed chair of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee by the prime minister last month.
He said: 鈥淚n the seven months since being awarded the 2022 Games there has been a lot of work done to prepare this planning application.
鈥淣ow is the time for anyone with an interest in the regeneration of Perry Barr to look at our plans in detail and give feedback to the city council planners.
鈥淲e want the people of the West Midlands to have ownership of the Games and this is one of the first significant ways in which they can do that.鈥
Arcadis provided support on the landscaping, Phil Jones Associates are providing urban design and civils services, Hoare Lea are acting as the M&E engineer and Couch Consulting is the structural engineer.
The deadline for commenting on the plans is 13 September.
