Engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald has been appointed lead designer for the infrastructure on the world鈥檚 first carbon neutral zero waste city, Masdar.

Masdar is a planned city, currently being built by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company. The city was designed by Foster + Partners and will use entirely renewable energy sources. Foster+ Partners remain lead designers for the overall masterplan design.

Ian Clarke, Mott MacDonald鈥檚 Middle East managing director, said the win meant a lot to the firm, and to their Abu Dhabi staff in particular.

A feature of the design is a Personal Rapid Transport system (PRT) which will run on renewable energy and play a fundamental role as cars will be banned from the city.
