I would like to take issue with a recent leader, which expressed the view that rising house prices are somehow a good thing

These kind of comments are okay coming from the tabloid press. However they do not form part of a decent argument in a professional magazine.

We are where we are because of inflated property prices. High property prices drive up rents, which in turn drive up wages, which in turn drive up costs and make us less competitive as a nation. Hence the reason to devalue sterling. We are no longer an island in economic terms. We must wake up and compete in a universal sense. High property prices will destroy our competitive edge. The goal of property professionals must be to design and build cheaper homes.
