Cost analysis for repairing of corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete structures
Specification optionsCapital costs £/m2Net present value for 60 years £/m2
Patch repair – hand applied (< 0.5 m2) on carbonated concrete with anticarbonation coating. Suitable in instance where carbonation on a building facade usually requires relatively small, isolated repairs360651.08
Patch repair – hand applied (< 0.5 m2) on highly chloride contaminated concrete with no additional protection Suitable in instance where carbonation on a building facade usually requires relatively small, isolated repairs 3602,034.62
Recast (0.5-5.0 m2) on carbonated concrete with anticarbonation coating. Suitable for large-volume repairs or where large areas of dense reinforcement are present180325.54
Recast (0.5-5.0 m2) on highly chloride contaminated concrete with no additional protection.Suitable for large-volume repairs or where large areas of dense reinforcement are present1801,017.31
Sprayed concrete (2-100 m2) on carbonated concrete with anticarbonation coating. Often chosen to repair fire-damaged structures as it can be applied quickly180325.54

Table notes
Cost for each of the repair techniques includes typical mobilisation, access and time costs
Exceptional costs have been excluded (such as high access cost, lane rental for motorway work, etc)
Costs are presented as £/m2 and assumes good quality workmanship
Typical life estimates for repairs are 20 years for carbonated concrete with anticarbonation coating and five years for highly chloride contaminated concrete with no additional protection
Expected service life of the structure is assumed to be 60 years
A discount rate of 3.5% is used to calculate net present values throughout the study period
